The Relationships between Stressors, Psychosocial Resources, and Depression among Individuals with Disabilities

Abstract
Although many studies examined the relationships among stressors, resources, and depression using the stress-coping framework, few studies tested the stress-coping framework involving individuals with disabilities. This study examines the predictors of depression among individuals with disabilities through the stress-coping theory framework. Specifically, it examines the effects of stressors (i.e., ADL/IADL and experience of discrimination) on depression and tests whether psychosocial factors(i.e., self-esteem and social support) mediate the relationship between stressors and depression. Sample consists of 869 individuals with disabilities who participated in the supplemental survey of Korean Welfare Panel Study on individuals with disabilities in 2008. Descriptive statistics show that about 17.0% of participants are estimated to be suffering from depression(CESD¡Ã25, male 15.5% and female 19.1%). The results of Structural Equation Modeling show that stress factors have only one indirect influence on depression through its effects on self-esteem. Specifically, higher levels of ADL/IADL and discrimination experience are associated with a lower level of self-esteem, which, in turn, predicts a higher level of depression. Mediation analyses revealed that self-esteem fully mediates the effects of both ADL/IADL and discrimination on depression. These findings indicate that self-esteem plays a dominant role in the process whereby stress factors influence depressive symptoms among individuals with disabilities. Limitations and implications of the study are discussed.
